- Brief description
A mobile application for teaching people how to fit and use walking aids properly, “Improving Canadians’ Walking Aid Skills, Learning, and Knowledge” (ICanWALK©). This project Aims to assess the influence of the ICanWALK© app on increasing knowledge and confidence of walking aids fitting and skills walking aids users.
- Primary contact
- Primary need
- People with disabilities need to be able to move around the built and natural environment easily.
- Description
People with disability, especially older people, need to remain independent and secure when walking. Better education on the fitting and proper use of WAs represents one way to facilitate personal mobility while reducing risks of falls.
The ICanWALK© study aims to support new and current walking aids users to be able to adjust and use walking aids (WAs) adequately. The ICanWALK© project will work with participants with mobility issues to train and evaluate a mobile application program. This ICanWALK program will enable Was users, especially seniors to learn the WA fitting and use tasks and then to assess themselves.
Our goal is to promote healthy mobility by increasing knowledge and confidence in the use of WAs, which will have an impact on preventing falls and injuries while improving independent mobility. The ICanWALK© study is a partnership between researchers at the university of Calgary and Laval.
