- Brief description
The project aims to create region-specific climate-disaster toolkits for people with disabilities and older adults across urban centers in Canada, providing essential, accessible resources to help increase their resilience and mitigate the risks posed by increasingly severe climate events.
- Primary contact
- Needs
- People with disabilities need to be able to move around the built and natural environment easily.
- Description
The project, initiated and supported by the non-profit, Peaceful Society, Science and Innovation Foundation focuses on addressing the increased risks faced by people with disabilities (PWDs) and older adults due to climate disasters. As these disasters become more frequent and severe, PWDs and older adults are often left without accessible, localized information. To address this, the project aims to increase resilience of these vulnerable communities via the development of climate-disaster toolkits that are specifically adapted to each region or metropolitan area across Canada. These toolkits will serve as both downloadable resources and live information hubs, ensuring that PWDs have the necessary information to prepare for and mitigate the impacts of climate disasters. The toolkits will be based on data from various sources, including StatsCan, and will be tested and refined through prototypes. The project will be implemented with the collaboration of partner organizations including MAP and will include an evaluation component to assess the usability and effectiveness of the toolkits.
