The first phase of the RAD Gearbox project, focused on understanding individuals’ needs, is complete.
We are excited to announce the new partnership between UBC Athletics & Recreation and RAD. As part of this collaboration, the second Gearbox will be available at the UBC Recreation Center. The soft launch is scheduled for February 28th, aiming to enhance accessibility and participation in adaptive recreation.
The RAD research team presented their findings at the ACRM Conference in October 2024 in a Spotlight Session, presented by Pegah Derakhshan, highlighting the impact of adaptive equipment on participation in outdoor recreation.

We have completed gathering data for the first phase of the project, which aimed to determine the needs, interests, and challenges of stakeholders regarding a recreational assistive device loan program. The RAD GearBox will have its soft launch on June 1st.
The results of the first phase of the project were presented at the Increase BC conference with the title: ‘Improving Participation and Support for Individuals with Mobility Impairments in Leisure-Time Physical Activities.’
Additionally, a scoping review on barriers and facilitators of outdoor adaptive physical activity for individuals with mobility impairments was presented as a poster at the WCNR conference.

The first phase, aiming to understand the challenges and needs of individuals with mobility impairments for participating in outdoor recreational activities, is in progress.
We have recruited 21 participants with spinal cord injury and other mobility impairments and 15 participants with lower limb loss for this project. Currently, we are analyzing the data.
We expect the soft launch of the RAD gearbox on Vancouver Island in April 2024.
